Personality
General personality:
Harry tends to be easygoing, for the most part, although when angered he can be extremely dangerous. He’s a bit of a smart aleck, especially when under stress, and is fond of bad puns and pop-culture references. He has a strong chivalrous instinct where women are concerned, and hates seeing them get hurt when he can do something to help, although his first instinct when dealing with anyone in trouble is to see what he can do. He considers it his duty to use his magic to help people whenever possible, and reacts badly when others with similar powers use their talents to harm others. If, despite his best efforts, he is unable to help someone, he tends to dwell on his failure.
This instinct to help others can sometimes give Harry a “shoot first, ask questions later” attitude to problem-solving; he’ll throw caution to the winds and charge into a situation without always knowing what he’s getting himself into if lives are on the line. This kind of bluntness can also apply to his social interactions at times, especially when he’s under stress. Fortunately, he’s usually capable of getting himself out of the messes this behavior tends to get him into.
Harry is extremely loyal to his friends, seeing them as all but family, and the easiest way to provoke him is to harm them in any way; this tends to end badly for all involved.
History
Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden was born to Margaret Gwendolyn LeFay and Malcolm Dresden on Halloween. His birth apparently resulted in the death of his mother, leaving it to his father, a traveling stage magician, to raise young Harry. Unfortunately, Malcolm Dresden died when Harry was six years old, resulting in Harry being shunted from foster home to foster home for the next seven years.
At age 10, Harry’s magical talents first began to manifest when he used wind magic to win a school long-jump competition. Three years after the appearance of his talents, Harry and Elaine Mallory, another orphan with magical talent, were adopted by Justin DuMorne, a former Warden of the White Council of wizards. DuMorne taught his young wards to control and use their magical talents in addition to serving as a surrogate parent, but when Harry was 16, he discovered that DuMorne’s motivations weren’t as pure as they seemed. DuMorne brainwashed Elaine, and attempted to do the same to Harry. Harry, after a hasty bargain with his “faerie godmother,” the Leanansidhe, managed to defeat DuMorne, resulting in the apparent deaths of both DuMorne and Elaine. For this, Harry was put on trial by the White Council for breaking the First Law of Magic (“Thou shalt not kill by use of magic”), and would have been sentenced to death if not for the intervention of the wizard Ebenezar McCoy. Instead, Harry’s sentence was commuted to the Doom of Damocles, under which he would be immediately put to death for any further breach of the laws of magic.
After several years learning magic and self-control under McCoy’s tutelage, Harry moved to Chicago, where he eventually worked at the private investigation firm Ragged Angel Investigations. After three years at Ragged Angel, Harry acquired a license as a private investigator and decided to open his own business in the field, billing himself as Chicago’s only professional wizard.
Harry dealt with a number of supernatural incidents in his early years on the job, from a sorcerer wreaking vengeance on a local mob boss, to rampaging werewolves, working closely with the Special Investigations branch of the Chicago Police. As a reward for one of these jobs, the White Council even lifted the Doom of Damocles that had been placed on Harry. Eventually, however, his jobs brought him into contact with the Red Court of vampires, one of three such groups and a major player in supernatural politics. During the kidnapping and subsequent rescue of Susan Rodriguez, Harry’s then-lover, by the Red Court, Harry killed a noblewoman of the Court, sparking an ongoing war between the White Council and Red Court.
During the war, Harry continued to work as a private investigator/wizard for hire. Among other jobs, he helped the Christian Knights of the Cross prevent the release of a devastating plague curse; after the death of Shiro Yoshimo, one of the Knights, Harry was given possession of the holy sword Fidelacchius, one of only three such blades, until a suitable wielder could be found. During his work with the Knights, he was also exposed to the influence of the fallen angel Lasciel, whose psychic “shadow” took up residence in Harry’s mind. Another job during this period involved the elimination of a group of vampires, during which Harry suffered severe burns to his left hand and discovered the hard way that his magical shield was incapable of protecting against intense heat or cold.
Harry’s more recent jobs have seen him inducted as a Warden of the White Council to serve as a soldier, and placed back under the Doom of Damocles due to the actions of his recently acquired apprentice, Molly Carpenter. He has also begun investigating a mysterious organization that seems to be sabotaging the White Council’s war effort, which he confronted and temporarily defeated with the help (and sacrifice) of Lasciel’s shadow.
It’s shortly after this point that Harry finds himself in an unfamiliar world and the game begins…
What they have on arrival
-Leather duster (A long coat enchanted to protect its wearer against bludgeoning and slashing weapons. That said, the wearer will generally still receive a few bruises from heavier blows that hit the coat, and it won’t do much more in terms of protecting against heat or cold than any other coat.)
-Wizard’s staff (Handmade, inscribed with runes, and sturdy enough to serve as a rather effective bludgeon)
-Blasting rod (A rune-inscribed length of wood, shorter than the staff, used for quick-and-dirty fire magic)
-Shield Bracelet (Second incarnation; a bracelet of many metals hung with shield-shaped charms. It’s capable of projecting a bubble of protective energy, and recently upgraded to defend against intense changes in temperature, as well as most types of magical energy.)
-Pentacle amulet (Silver, inherited from mother. Often used as a sort of magical flashlight or dowsing pendulum, but otherwise its value is mostly sentimental.)
-Force rings (A set of silver rings, each consisting of three fused bands, worn on each finger of the right hand. Capable of storing kinetic energy for later release, they’re a useful last-resort weapon.)
-Smith & Wesson Model 29 (.44 caliber revolver, six shots, no additional ammunition. Carried in the duster’s pocket)

“Okay grasshopper, let’s try this again,” Harry said, trying not to sound exasperated. Molly was usually better at this kind of subtle work, and it was a bit surprising that she hadn’t gotten the hang of the spell yet. Sure, opening a gateway to the Nevernever takes some muscle, but you have to apply it in a pretty specific way to get it to do what you want, and I’d have thought this would be right up her alley.
Molly looked as frustrated as her teacher felt. There wasn’t a clock in the tiny subbasement lab, but they’d been at it for a couple of hours at least, and Harry sensed that his apprentice's patience was wearing as thin as his own. “Right, boss.” There was a slight hum of power as Molly gathered her will and murmured, “Rokotsu.”
And there it was.
A shimmering vertical tear opened along the unfinished concrete wall of the lab. Molly practically glowed.
“Nice job, kid.” Harry barely resisted the urge to ruffle her bleached hair or something similarly condescending; his apprentice seemed to have remembered that she was a teenager recently. “And nice touch with the incantation. It’s easier if you use your own words, since it links you with the magic. Next time should be—”
“Uh, Harry? Is it supposed to be doing that?”
The gateway was still expanding, eating away at the wall. It was definitely not supposed to be doing that. Hell’s bells, just what I needed. An out-of-control hole in reality. In my basement. Don’t I ever get a day off?
Harry pushed Molly behind him and reached out his maimed left hand, extending his senses toward the energy of the portal. That’s weird. It doesn’t feel like something she’d—
The portal flashed with angry light, and Harry vanished.
